Children’s Programs

River Edge offers programs for children of all ages.  From reading programs at the library to recreation camp in the summer to sports clinics and leagues there is definitely something for every child.

River Edge recreation Playground Camp Program

River Edge Recreation Summer Camp

One of the largest and longest running programs form the recreation department is the playground camp program.  This decades long program is a highlight of the summer for borough kids for generations.  The camp is run by the recreation department and runs July and August form 9:00am – 12:00pm on weekdays.  The camp employs dozens of borough students as counselors making it a great way for teenagers to make some money over the summer as well.  the camp runs different programs like a petting zoo, Olympics, street hockey, arts and crafts, as well as field trips to trampoline parks and bowling.

River Edge Girls Athletic League

REGal Sports

REGal is the River Edge Girls Athletic League and it offers programs for girls of all ages in a variety of sports.  REGal started as a softball league in 1965 and has grown to one of the largest girls organizations in the state.  They offer clinics, leagues, and travel teams in softball, basketball, running, volleyball, yoga, and field hockey.

River Edge Little League

River Edge Little League

River Edge Little League was founded in 1952 and has been an extremely popular program for boys of all ages to participate in baseball in River Edge.  With both recreational and travel leagues there is spot for all abilities.  Most games and practices occur at Memorial Field which boats 2 regulation little league fields.  Older leagues play games at Keneth B Gorge Field which has a larger 90 foot basepath field.

River Dell Soccer Association

River Dell Soccer

The River Dell Soccer Association runs leagues at the recreational level for boys and girls form Kindergarten to 8th grade in River Edge and Oradell.  They use fields in both River Edge and Oradell and mostly play in the Fall.  River Dell Soccer also runs the River Dell Blackhawks that is the travel soccer part of the club.  Travel teams are available for both boys and girls and leagues run in the Fall and Spring.

River Dell Junior Football

River Dell Junior Football

The River Dell Junior Football Association serves both River Edge and Oradell and provides programs for children in flag football, peewee, junior, and senior.  Practices and games are held each fall and are held in both towns depending on age level.  Their teams participate in the Northern Bergen Junior Football League.

River Dell Junior Cheer

River Dell Junior Cheer

River Dell Junior Cheer helps to develop a love of cheerleading in girls as young as 3rd grade.  They practice so they can cheer on their classmates at River Dell Junior Football games.  The season runs from September to November.

River Edge Junior Basketball is for boys and girls from 1st to 9th grade.  Teams have practices and games in town gymnasiums from November to March.

River Dell Lacrosse

River dell Lacrosse introduces young athletes to the fast paced game that is one of the newer sports in town.  Teams are created from grades 1st-8th for both boys and girls.  Practices and games are held in the Spring each year.

River Dell Junior Wrestling

River Dell Junior Wrestling

River Dell Junior Wrestling is open to all 1st – 8th graders who are River Edge or Oradell residents.  There are NO tryouts, skill or experience requirements, or weight restrictions. Our season starts in November and goes through February/March.
Practices are held Tuesday and Thursday evenings at River Dell High School through February.  Younger wrestlers practice from 6:00-7:30pm and older wrestlers practice from 7:30-9:00pm.  In Nov/Dec we have a few Saturday practices to be posted on website.

1st Year Wrestling Introduction Practices for 1st time wrestlers who have never wrestled. 
Scrimmages are held Saturday mornings or early evenings starting in January.  Each wrestler is paired with a wrestler from another area team.  Pairs are determined by similarity in age (no more than 2 years apart), weight (no more than a 10% differential), experience and skill level.  These are held at home and away. 
Tournaments are held Sundays.  Typically each wrestler is eligible for four tournaments.  Tournaments group by age divisions (Bantam: 7 & 8 yr olds, Novice: 9 & 10 yr olds, Junior: 11 & 12 yr olds, and Intermediate: 13 & 14 yr olds) and defined weight classes.  Experience and skill level are not part of the grouping for tournaments.

Asphalt Avengers Hockey Clinics

Asphalt Avengers Floor Hockey

The Asphalt Avengers hockey clinics offer an introduction to hockey at the Veterans Memorial Park hockey rink and at River Dell High School.  Clinics are run in conjunction with the River Dell High School hockey team and focus on fundamentals and fun.  Clinics are free.

River Edge Recreation Tennis lessons

Tennis Lessons

The River Edge recreation Commission runs kids tennis lessons at Veteran’s Memorial Park in conjunction with All pro Tennis Staff.  Lessons are grouped by age and instruction is for beginner to advanced.
Registration is done by the borough through Community Pass.

River Edge Run 2021

River Edge Run

Every April River Edge hosts the Annual River Edge Run.  The event offers both a 5K race and 1 mile fun run/walk for kids of all ages.  Participants get a t-shirt and the pride of running a race in their hometown.

US Sports Institute

The US Sports Institute has been providing sports camps and year-round sports programs to communities for over 10 years, working with over 500 organizations in the USA. These organizations include Recreation Departments, YMCA’s, JCC’s, Girl Scouts, School Districts & a variety of other private organizations that require quality sports provision.
River Edge Recreation has partnered with US Sports Institute to offer a wide range of sports camps, classes and lessons for all ability levels and a range of ages spanning 2 to adult. From Parent and Me, to toddler, to preschool, to kids classes and right through to adult programming, we have your sports needs covered.
Programs typically run by season in the spring, summer, fall and winter. Camps, classes and lessons run year-round to ensure we always have sports options to meet your family’s needs.
